List of grape varieties |
Aglianico is a very old red wine variety that is mainly grown in Basilicata and Campania .
origin
It was introduced to Campania by the Greeks over 2500 years ago as vitis hellenica and from there spread to Apulia and Basilicata. It is considered one of the best grape varieties in southern Italy and is now also gaining popularity outside of Italy . It is worth mentioning plantings in Argentina and California (→ Viticulture in California with the designations of origin St. Helena AVA and Paso Robles AVA )
distribution
Around 13,042 hectares of vineyards (survey 1990) are planted with Aglianico. The grape variety ripens a little early, loves deep soils and prefers volcanic subsoil. After a long vegetation cycle (up to the end of October / beginning of November) it reaches its distinctive profile. It produces deep ruby red, full-bodied and full-bodied wines with intense tannins and a strong acidity.
Important wines produced from Aglianico are for example the DOC wines Aglianico del Vulture (from the volcanic slopes of Monte Vulture in Basilicata ), Molise Aglianico and Aglianico del Taburno , which, like the famous Taurasi, is produced in Campania .
Ampelographic varietal characteristics
- The shoot tip is open. It is very hairy and woolly.
- The light green young leaves are only slightly hairy.
- The large leaves are five-lobed and indented to a medium depth. The stalk bay is closed like a lyre. The blade is bluntly serrated.
- The cone-shaped grape is medium-sized, shouldered and quite dense. The round berries are medium-sized and blue-black in color.
Ripeness: late - ripens about 35 days after the Gutedel .
properties
It is susceptible to downy mildew and gray mold rot .
Wine
Because of their high tannin content, the wines made from the Aglianico grape generally need a few years of maturation to fully develop their quality. The Canneto is an exception to this.
