Taurasi (wine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Taurasi is a dry red wine from the southern Italian region of Campania , which received DOC status in 1970 and DOCG status in 1993 . It is named after the municipality of Taurasi in the province of Avellino .

history

Wine was already grown in Irpinia in pre-Christian times . It owes its reputation to the formative grape variety Aglianico , which produces dark-colored, tannic and acidic wines that have great aging potential. The special position of the Taurasi can be measured by the fact that until 2003 it was the only wine in Campania with a DOCG classification. In the 1920s, the Taurasi came to European importance. The phylloxera plague had destroyed large parts of the northern Italian and French vineyards. In the Taurasi region, however, the pest was unable to spread because the very high sandy soils of volcanic origin prevented the parasite from spreading. During these years the "ferrovia del vino" (railway line of wine) was created with which whole tank trucks filled with Aglianico wine were dispatched to the wine-growing regions of Tuscany , Piedmont and Bordeaux .

Cultivation

The wine-growing area is located in the hills and mountains of Irpinia . The majority of the cultivation area is at an altitude between 400 and 700 meters and includes the area of the municipalities: Taurasi , Bonito , Castelfranci , Castelvetere sul Calore , Fontanarosa , Lapio , Luogosano , Mirabella Eclano , Montefalcione , Montemarano , Montemiletto , Paternopoli , Pietradefusi , Sant'Angelo all'Esca , San Mango sul Calore , Torre Le Nocelle and Venticano .

In 2017, 15,847 hectoliters of DOC wine were produced.

Castelfranci, Jampenne, Radici and Torre are considered particularly good locations.

generation

The wine is (85-100%) from the mostly grape Aglianico grapes. A maximum of 15% other red grape varieties may be added. The prescribed maturation period for Taurasi DOCG is three years (including one year in wooden barrels), with the addition of "Riserva" four years (including 18 months in wooden barrels).
