reception

Steve Loewy gave the album 4½ (out of five) stars in Allmusic and wrote that the set had a haze of classical music because much of the recording was muffled. Nevertheless, there is also a healthy mix of blues and bop. Shipp continues to impress with great technique, an ear for subtlety and rhythmic variety.

According to John Sharpe, who reviewed the album in All About Jazz , the first CD (from 1999), like many of Shipp's albums of that time, consists of a series of short pieces with different line-ups (solo, duo, trio). The live performance from The Stone in the same line-up, which was recorded 17 years later, shows that a lot has changed, but much has remained the same. So Shipp remains a unique figure who moves between stubborn motifs , "bombs" of the left hand and suddenly sparkling inserts, while Parker's hooting Coll'arco is still his strength. Rob Brown concentrates exclusively on the alto saxophone here, and while the contours of his anxious lines jump and tumble as before, he plays much more sparing split tones. The most important difference, however, is the switch to long-form improvisations with three recordings between half an hour and six minutes.
