Not Bound is a jazz album by Matthew Shipp . The recordings, made on June 14, 2016 in Park West Studios, Brooklyn, were released on the Polish label For Tune at the end of 2017.
background
The woodwind player Daniel Carter has worked with Matthew Shipp since the mid-1980s , in 1997 in the ensemble Other Dimensions in Music ( Time is of the Essence is Beyond Time ), which was expanded to include the pianist, and on Shipp's album Strata . On Not Bound , the pianist and his long-time colleagues Michael Bisio on bass and Whit Dickey on drums accompany the multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter in a series of spontaneous compositions.

According to Don Phipps, who reviewed the album in All About Jazz and awarded it 4½ (out of five) stars, one can only hope that this recording is only the starting point “for this quartet. The four highly talented musicians provide rousing music. They listen to each other attentively and follow or lead, as needed. ”The music played is dense, complex, lyrical and harmonious. It is challenging, but never overpowering. Over the years, Matthew Shipp has remained true to his vision, the author sums up. "No compromise.
