Mahi Binebine (born in Marrakech in 1959 ) is a Moroccan painter, sculptor and Francophone writer.

Life

Mahi Binebine's father died early, and his mother supported the large family. His brother Aziz was one of the coup plotters against King Hassan II in 1971 and was imprisoned in Tazmamart prison for eighteen years . He studied mathematics and went to Paris in 1980 to continue his studies at the Pierre and Marie Curie University . From 1985 he worked in France as a mathematics teacher for eight years. Between 1994 and 1999 he lived in New York City . Since 2002 he has been living in Marrakech again.

Between 2001 and 2004 he worked with the Spanish painter Miguel Galanda . As a painter and sculptor, Binebine participated in various exhibitions. The Guggenheim Museum in New York bought pictures of him. In 2009 he was represented at the Venice Biennale .

Binebine published several novels in French. In 2010 he received the Prix ​​du Roman arabe for Les Étoiles de Sidi Moumen , the novel was filmed in 2012 by Nabil Ayouch under the title Les Chevaux de Dieu . The English translation of the novel was shortlisted for the International DUBLIN Literary Award in 2015 .
