In May 2010 the conglomerate Mahindra & Mahindra took over the company. After the acquisition, the company introduced in 2013 the electric hatchback a e2o. Today, the company sells electric vehicles in different market segments: the Estate e2oPlus City Smart which eVerito sedan , the commercial vehicle eSupro (for passengers and cargo) and the electrical autorickshaw eAlfa.

In 2013 the American business magazine Fast Company ranked Mahindra Electric Mobility as one of the 50 most innovative companies in the world.

history

The Reva Electric Car Company (RECC) was founded in 1994 by Chetan Maini as a joint venture between the Maini Group from Bangalore India and Amerigon Electric Vehicle Technologies from the USA. The company's sole purpose was to develop and manufacture an inexpensive, compact electric vehicle. RECC launched the REVA in 2001.

REVA is an acronym for English Revolutionary Electric Vehicle Alternative (dt. Revolutionary electric vehicle alternative).

RECC worked with suppliers to develop parts for the REVA. Curtis Instruments, Inc. from the USA developed a control unit especially for the car, Tudor India Limited supplied bespoke batteries from Prestolite for the high-tech battery pack, and the charger for the REVA was from Modular Power Systems (MPS) from the USA developed. However, RECC later produced its own charger for the REVA together with MPS and the Maini Group.

In 2004 GoinGreen from England agreed with RECC to import the REVA under the brand name G-Wiz and to bring it onto the market.

In 2008 a product update was launched under the name REVAi. The production of a lithium-ion variant called REVA L-ion started in 2009.

The future models Reva NXR and Reva NXG were presented at the IAA 2009 in Frankfurt am Main. During the show, Reva and General Motors India announced a technical collaboration to develop a low cost electric vehicle for the Indian market. As a result, General Motors India announced an electric version of the Chevrolet Spark station wagon called e-Spark at the 2010 Auto Expo in New Delhi . Reva should provide the battery technology for this.

On May 26, 2010, Mahindra & Mahindra, India's largest SUV and tractor manufacturer, acquired a majority stake of 55.2 percent in Reva Electric Car Company . After the deal, the company was renamed the Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicle Company . Pawan Goenka, President of Mahindra's Automotive Industry, has been named chairman of the new company. Due to the change of ownership, General Motors withdrew from the e-Spark cooperation with Reva.

In February 2011 GoinGreen, the sole importer of the G-Wiz for Great Britain, announced that the model was no longer in stock, but that it would still be available on request. The lead time should be four to six weeks.

The company was incorporated into Mahindra Electric Mobility Ltd. in 2016 . renamed in order to be able to reflect the development of powertrains and integrated mobility solutions as a business area in addition to vehicle manufacturing .

REVA models i and L-ion

Between 2001 and 2012, Mahindra Electric (then still Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles) manufactured two versions of the REVAi light electric vehicle. The i and L-ion models [4] are two-door light vehicles with a tailgate, 2.60 meters long, 1.30 meters wide and 1.50 meters high. The REVAi is equipped with lead accumulators and the REVA L-ion with lithium-ion accumulators . Both models are designed for two adults and two children (in the rear). The rear seats can be folded down to create a luggage compartment. The maximum payload is 275 kilograms.

The power supply consists of eight 6-volt lead-acid batteries, each 200 Ah, which - connected in series - provide a driving voltage of 48 volts. The energy flows through a 350 ampere control unit to an AC servo motor with a nominal output of 6 kW (8.2 HP). The peak output is 13.1 kW (17.5 PS) for lead batteries and 14.5 kW (19.7 PS) for lithium-ion batteries. When the brake pedal is depressed, depending on the speed, around 30 A to 170 A flow back into the accumulator (recuperation).

The REVA was launched in India in 2001 and was also available in the following countries: Bhutan, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rice, Germany, France, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Japan, Colombia, Malta, Monaco, Nepal, Norfolk Island , Norway , Peru, the Philippines, Portugal, Spain, Sri Lanka, Hungary and Cyprus. The REVA is exempt from most of the European crash test rules, as it is not classified in the EU vehicle class M1 (automobiles), but rather in the vehicle class L7e ( heavy four-wheeled vehicles ) due to its low weight and low power .

The two models could also be exported to the United States if they were given a speed limiter for use as a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV).

With a total of 3000 (5/07) copies sold, the REVA and CityEL fought a duel for the best-selling electric car with 6000 (as of September 2008) sales . In 2011 at the latest, it was replaced by the Nissan Leaf in this category . The REVA is also very popular in London, where you don't have to pay a congestion charge with it. The manufacturer has tried to accommodate the various customer groups with over 2000 equipment and color variants for a tailor-made vehicle.

Sales in Germany were taken over in May 2009 by Smiles in Aub near Würzburg as general importer. Smiles AG was also the manufacturer of the CityEL model. The price range started at around 13,000 euros for the standard version with lead-acid batteries and went up to around 23,000 euros for the deluxe version with lithium batteries.

Review from Top Gear

The British car magazine Top Gear has repeatedly criticized and mocked the G-Wiz, as the REVAi is called in Great Britain. A crash test commissioned by Top Gear, which was carried out in 2007 according to the Euro NCAP standard, showed that occupants would suffer serious or life-threatening injuries if an accident at a speed of 40 mph. After the results of the controversial crash test were announced, sales of the G-Wiz fell briefly by two-thirds.

Top Gear voted the G-Wiz Worst Car of 2007. The magazine also ranked it the third worst car in 20 years in October 2013 because it was ugly, badly made and dangerous.

In the show of the same name, the G-Wiz was destroyed in many ways. For example, he was blown up in December 2007.  Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond and James May , former presenters of Top Gear, have continued this tradition in their new program The Grand Tour : In December 2016, several G-Wiz vehicles were shot down and destroyed in a game sinking ships between Hammond and May .

The NXG and NXR models

The successor models of i and L-ion of REVA NXG (2-seater with Targa roof - hatchback ) and the REVA NXR (Viersitzer- sedan with hatchback ) in the variants City with lead-acid batteries and intercity with lithium-ion Accumulators.

Reva presented the REVA-NXG, a two-seat roadster concept vehicle with a nominal range of 200 km per charge and a top speed of 120 km / h, in 2005.

In December 2010, the large-scale production of the NXR model started at the vehicle plant in Bangalore. An initial number of 30,000 units per year was planned.

Mahindra e20

The Mahindra station wagon, formerly the REVA-NXR, is a small electric car manufactured by the Mahindra Group. The e2o is the successor to the REVAi and was developed using REVA's electrical technology. Production was originally planned for the end of 2010, deliveries for early 2011 and export production for 2012. The e2o was launched in March 2013 at a price of 596,000 rupees (10,000 euros) with a government subsidy of 29% from the Union Territory of Delhi in India. It was also introduced in Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, and Kochi. Mahindra also launched the vehicle in the UK in April 2016, but later withdrew from the market in May 2017.

The car has a lithium-ion battery that takes five hours to charge. With a weight of 830 kg, it offers a range of 100 km and a top speed of 90 km / h. The product was withdrawn from the market in 2016 after the four-door successor was launched.

future plans

Five new concept vehicles and models as well as the new MESMA electric vehicle architecture were presented at the Auto Expo 2018 in Delhi. The name stands for Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Architecture and, with 380 volts, offers a more powerful drive than is usual for the Indian market. This architecture should increase the range of future models to over 390 km.

In April 2018, Mahindra Electric announced a pilot project in Hyderabad in which the eVerito electric limousine was to be integrated into the Indian taxi service Meru. Meru and Mahindra Electric plan to carry out this project in other Indian cities.

After an economic summit in the Indian state of Maharashtra, Mahindra Electric signed a letter of intent with the state government and pledged to invest 5 billion rupees (€ 62 million) in the production of electric vehicles. In addition, the company was expected to put 1,000 electric vehicles on the roads within a year in collaboration with the government, taxi services and logistics partners.

Mahindra Electric and the FIA Formula E Championship

Mahindra Electric presented a car for the FIA Formula E Championship at the Auto Expo in Delhi in 2014 . The Mahindra team worked closely with the Mahindra Racing Team, the racing division of the Mahindra Group, to get the cars ready in time for the first FIA Formula E championship. The championship took place in Beijing in September 2014 and Mahindra Racing was the only Indian racing team to take part in the first Formula E championship. After the first successful championship, Mahindra Racing looked into the possibility of bringing the all-electric racing series to India for the 2016-2017 season. Currently, however, even an event in India in the 2019 season is unlikely.

With its involvement in Formula E, Mahindra Electric not only wants to gain a foothold in the global e-racing scene, but also use the experience and technology that are necessary for Formula E cars in sporty vehicles that are normally used powerful internal combustion engines can be found.
