Mahmud I.

Mahmud I ( August 2, 1696 in Edirne ; † December 13, 1754 in Constantinople ) was Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1730 to 1754 .

Life

Mahmud was a son of Mustafa II and was replaced by his uncle Ahmed III during the Patrona Halil uprising . brought on the throne. After a military revolt was suppressed, the war with Persia continued with varying degrees of success, ending in 1736 with a peace treaty that restored the pre-war status quo .

The next opponent faced the Ottoman Empire in 1735, Russia , later allied with the Roman-German Emperor and the Austrian Habsburg Monarchy . The war lasted four years; the victories achieved by Russia were countered by several setbacks by the Imperialists . The peace treaty of Belgrade in 1739 was a triumph for Turkish diplomacy. The sultan, eager for peace, is said to have been under the influence of his chief eunuch, Haci Beşir Aga . In 1754 Mahmud died of heart disease when he returned from the mosque from Friday prayers .

During the reign of Mahmud, the system was introduced to send Phanariots as administrators in the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia .
