particularities

Silted up and dammed up again

The Mahner Teich is a former reservoir in what is now Lower Saxony . It was located between Ohlendorf in the north and Klein Mahner in the south. Gut Nienrode is located on the east bank .

The pond was created at the end of the 14th century when the Warne was dammed in 1393 . At that time it had an area of about 1200 acres (about 312 hectares) and extended about 3 km in a west-east direction. This made it the largest body of water in the Liebenburg district .

The pond created by Hans von Schwicheldt fulfilled a protective function for the diocese of Hildesheim against attacks by the duchy of Braunschweig . At the inflow, at Groß Mahner, there was the “Red Mill”, at the outflow at Nienrode the “Teichmühle”. Buildings from the Red Mill are still preserved; The field name on the former east bank still indicates the Teichmühle.

In the 19th century the pond was gradually abandoned and the dykes and water regulating devices no longer maintained, which silted it up. In 1798 it had only a third of its former area. Despite the final drainage in 1820, the area of the former pond is still the preferred location for a heron colony .

Around 2000 the pond was expanded as a retention area for the Warne, so that today it is again filled with water about twice a year.
