description

Maihueniopsis glomerata forms dense, flat to hemispherical or irregularly curved cushions up to 1 meter in diameter. A fleshy, thickened taproot is formed. The egg-shaped, tapered, slightly or not humped shoot sections are 2 to 5 centimeters long. Of the approximately 20 small, felty areoles per shoot section, the one or two uppermost are occasionally without thorns. The one or two narrow flattened central spines are slightly protruding, straight and up to 5 centimeters long. The up to two radial spines are bristle-like.

The light yellow to dirty yellow flowers are up to 5 centimeters in length. Your upside-down conical pericarpel is covered with about 15 to 18 areoles, which have bristles on the upper edge. The spherical to somewhat elongated, thornless fruits are initially green and turn yellow when the fruit is ripe .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Maihueniopsis glomerata is in the north of Chile , in the south of Bolivia as well as in the Argentine provinces Jujuy , Salta , Catamarca , La Rioja , San Juan and Mendoza in the Puna vegetation of the high altitudes of the Andes at altitudes of up to 4000 meters on very dry, stony plains spread.

It was first described as Opuntia glomerata in 1830 by Adrian Hardy Haworth . Roberto Kiesling placed the species in the genus Maihueniopsis in 1984 . Nomenclatory synonyms are Tephrocactus glomeratus (Haw.) Backeb. (1953) and Parviopuntia glomerata (Haw.) Marn.-Lap. & Soulaire (1956, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 43.1). Maihueniopsis glomerata is very variable, therefore numerous other synonyms are known.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
