Mainkur is the field name of the right bank of the River Main lying area in Frankfurt . It is located north of the historic center of Frankfurt-Fechenheim . The name probably originated in the 18th century.

history

The name was first mentioned in 1768 in connection with the Main Cur customs post . This levied customs duties on the border between Offenbach am Main , located in the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel (later the Electorate of Hesse ), and the city of Frankfurt am Main , which ran at the level of the Main arc . Fechenheim and the later Mainkur area initially belonged to the County of Hanau and were after 1736, after the death of the last Hanau count, Johann Reinhard III. , inherited to the Landgraviate. The Mainkur-Stuben restaurant , which is the first conspicuous building in the city that visitors come to from the east via Bundesstrasse 8 and Bundesstrasse 40, is located roughly at the site of the customs station .

From 1765 the Hanauer Landstrasse was developed as an important traffic route along the Main from the Hanauer Kinzigbrücke via Dörnigheim to the gates of Frankfurt and paved with gravel until 1780. As a result, the first inns with the name Zur Mainkur opened along the street . A Mainkur estate is known from 1840 .

In the course of the July Revolution in the autumn of 1830, the customs station was reduced to rubble during the so-called " Hanau riots ", which were also directed against the tariffs on the external borders of the Electoral State, as was the tax office and the Mainzollamt in Hanau.

In 1848 the Frankfurt-Hanau Railway , which runs largely parallel to the street, was opened and also received a Mainkur stop - in the beginning a border station on the still existing border between Hesse and the Free City of Frankfurt .

In 1870, the now dissolved Cassella Farbwerke Mainkur AG was founded north-west of Fechenheim , and various successor companies still produce colorants and other chemicals on their factory premises. Other companies also settled to the left and right of Hanauer Landstrasse. Since then, the face of the Mainkur has been shaped by industrial and commercial enterprises.

Mainkur was adopted as the name for places and businesses. There is, for example, the street An der Mainkur, a Mainkur campsite on the Main and the Bier-Hannes zur Mainkur brewery .
