The Mainbogen - also called Offenbacher Mainbogen and Fechenheimer Mainbogen - is a several kilometers long, S-shaped loop of the Main in Hesse . At this point, the river marks the joint city limits of Frankfurt am Main and Offenbach am Main .

location

The curve of the Main extends from the Mainkur in the east to the Offenbach harbor in the west . At this point the river curves around the Frankfurt-Fechenheim district on the right bank . On the left bank there is a nature reserve with meadows, fields and the Schultheis pond as well as the Offenbach district of Bürgel and Offenbach.

Landscape and infrastructure

The Carl-Ulrich-Brücke crosses the river in its southern arch and connects Fechenheim with Offenbach for road traffic. The bend of the Main is accompanied by several hiking trails on both banks. These include the Main cycle path , the Hessian long -distance cycle path R3 (on the left bank), the Mainuferweg (both banks) and a section of the GrünGürtel circular cycle path (left bank). The historic Fechenheim towpath leads along the right bank of the Main , and there are also several sports areas. In its further course towards Offenbach city center, in close proximity to the left bank of the river, you will find the Isenburg Palace , the Büsing Park with the Lili Temple and the Büsing Palais as well as the Mainpark apartment complex . Some of these are only separated from the bank by the Mainstrasse running along the Maindamm .

On the right-hand side of the Main, along the arch of the Main, is the district of Fechenheim in Frankfurt. There are also large open spaces and a campsite here. The mostly agricultural areas south of Frankfurt-Fechenheim, which belong to the Frankfurt green belt , are designated as a landscape protection area and serve as a floodplain . In the event of a flood , this will reduce the pressure on Offenbach's main dam . These areas form the largest contiguous floodplain in the Frankfurt urban area.

In the upper bend of the Main, only the Arthur-von-Weinberg-Steg , built in 1981 as a pedestrian and cycle path bridge, connects Bürgel with Fechenheim. The footbridge also serves as a scaffolding for the pipelines of the AllessaChemie company between Fechenheim and Offenbach. As part of a renovation of the main dam in Offenbach, which dates back to 1893, all the trees there are to be felled. In the upcoming renovation, the dike will be rebuilt and new trees will be planted. A poplar avenue on the right bank path between Mainkur and Carl-Ulrich-Brücke had to be partly felled or severely trimmed in 2010 to avert danger.

Planning

In January 2015, the Environment Agency of the City of Frankfurt am Main reported that the area on the Frankfurt side of the Main arch should be designed to be close to nature again in the long term. The measures planned for the next few years after the land consolidation have been completed are to include floodplains through which a meandering branch of the Main flows. Furthermore, part of the site is to continue to be used as arable land.

Renaturation

In 2015, individual small oxbow lakes were created in the area of the Main arch. In 2016, € 2.3 million, that is more than three quarters of the total costs, was made available by the State of Hesse for initial measures in the years up to 2020. On the areas belonging to the city of Frankfurt am Main, a tributary of around 700 meters is to be built parallel to the Main. To do this, the old towpath Fechenheimer towpath must be abandoned. It is hoped that the new water will create habitats and spawning areas for native fish species and that the stork will settle in the area again.

In other areas of the Main bend, a larger river arm is to be created in the long term. The 134 owners of the approx. 1000 plots of land previously used for agriculture are to be given new plots elsewhere in Frankfurt or to be compensated financially.
