The Maipo Island ( Spanish Isla Maipo , in the United Kingdom Buls Island ) is a low and snow-covered island in the Palmer Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located in the entrance to Buls Bay in the east of the Brabant Island .
Participants in the Belgica expedition (1897–1899), led by the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery , carried out an initial rough mapping. Participants of the 2nd Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1947–1948) named it after the tanker Maipo , one of the ships used for Chilean research trips to the Antarctic in the 1940s and 1950s. The namesake of the British name is the bay of the same name. It is named after Karel Buls (1837–1914), Mayor of Brussels and supporter of de Gerlaches' research trip.
