Maira (daughter of Proitos)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maira ( Greek  Μαῖρα ), daughter of Proitos and Anteia and thus great-granddaughter of Sisyphus , is a figure in Greek mythology .

As the companion of the hunting goddess Artemis , Maira had to vow to remain a virgin. From Zeus , however, she became the mother of Lokros , whereupon Artemis killed her. In another version of the legend, Maira died a virgin.

Polygnot depicted Maira in his famous picture of Nekyia - the descent of Odysseus into the underworld - in the Lesche der Knidier in Delphi . There she was sitting on a rock next to Aktaion , who like her had been killed by Artemis.
