Majk Herwasijowytsch Johansen ( Ukrainian Майк Гервасійович Йогансен * October 16 . Jul / 28. October  1895 greg. In Kharkiv , Kharkov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 27 October 1937 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian scholar, writer, poet , Playwright, translator and literary scholar.

Life

Majk Johansen was born in Kharkiv as the son of a German teacher who immigrated from Latvia. The family was of German and Ukrainian descent, other sources according to Swedish or Norwegian origins.

Majk Johansen graduated from Kharkiv University in 1917 with a degree in philology . He mastered ancient Greek and Latin, spoke fluent English, German, Italian, Spanish and French, and had a knowledge of Scandinavian and Slavic languages. While he wrote exclusively in German and Russian until 1917, from 1919 he wrote only in Ukrainian. In 1921 he wrote, together with, among others, Mykola Chwylowyj , Volodymyr Sosjura , Wassyl Ellan-Blakytnyj and Pavlo Tytschyna, a milestone in Ukrainian proletarian literature, the manifesto: “Community of Ukrainian workers and Ukrainian proletarian artists” which was published as an anthology .

During his 17 years as a writer, he created eight books with poetry, ten with prose, two children's books and two literary content. Johansen was also the author of several scripts for theater productions and a screenwriter.

During the Great Terror , he was arrested by the NKVD in Kharkiv on August 18, 1937 and charged with Ukrainian nationalism and terrorist activities. On October 27, 1937, he was shot dead in mass executions in Kiev on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the October Revolution . His symbolic grave is in the Lukjanivska Cemetery in Kiev.
