Wassyl Ellan-Blakytnyj ( Ukrainian Василь Еллан-Блакитний ; * December 31, 1893 July / January 12,  1894 greg. In Kosel , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † December 4, 1925 in Charkiw , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian revolutionary , Journalist and writer . Wassyl Ellan-Blakytnyj was one of the first theorists and critics of Ukrainian literature .

Life

Wassyl Ellan-Blakytnyj was born in the village of Kosel, today's urban-type Mychajlo-Kozjubynske in Chernihiv district, into a priestly family as Wassyl Mychailowytsch Ellanskyj / Василь Михайлович Елланський . From 1910 he attended the Chernigov Theological Seminary and from 1914 he studied at the economic department of the Kiev Trade Institute. Vasyl Ellan-Blakytnyj belonged to the left among Ukrainian intellectuals and as such believed in the possibility of building a new Ukraine within socialism. From 1917 he was a member of the Ukrainian Party of Socialist Revolutionaries (UPSR.) And in 1918 he became a founder and until 1920 the party leader of the Borotbystiv Party (ukr. Боротьбистів ). He moved this party further and further to the left and finally merged with the Communist Party of Ukraine in 1920 .

In his publications he also used the pseudonyms Waleryj Pronosa, Markiz Popeliasty, Wassyl Ellan, A. Ortal Hart and Pronosa Mriinyk. He died of heart disease in Kharkiv at the age of 31 and was buried in the first cemetery (now the youth park) in Kharkiv.

In the 1930s, his works were considered nationalistic in the Soviet Union and were banned, and the monument dedicated to him in Kharkiv was destroyed. After Stalin's death he was rehabilitated and selected works and poems published.
