Ascent history

In 1991 and 1996 there were attempts to climb it. In 1991 a four-man British expedition (Steve Hillen, Mike Penlington, Dave Tyson and David Lister) attempted to climb the south side of the east ridge. After an unsuccessful climb, Steve Hillen and Dave Tyson had a fatal accident on the descent.

Stephen Sustad and Simon Yates tried twice unsuccessfully to climb the east ridge in August and September 1996 (first from the northeast flank, then from the southeast flank).

The Makrong Chhish is still unclimbed.
