The Hispar Muztagh is a mountain range in the Karakoram in the Pakistani autonomous region of Gilgit-Baltistan , the former Northern Areas . It is part of the main Karakoram chain known as the Muztagh. The Hispar Muztagh is the second highest mountain range of the Karakoram after the Baltoro Muztagh . It contains numerous high "seven-thousanders". The Distaghil Sar , the highest mountain in the chain, reaches a height of 7885  m and is therefore only towered over by K2 and the highest mountains of the Gasherbrum group in the Karakoram.

location

The Hispar Muztagh is located in the northwestern part of the Karakoram. It runs from west-northwest to east-southeast from the Hunza valley to the firn basin of the Biafogletscher ( Snow Lake ) and the Khurdopin glacier and has an extension of about 70 kilometers. To the south it is bordered by the Hispar Glacier and the Hispar River Valley . In the north, the mountain range is bounded by the Shimshal valley. Shimshal and Hispartal run roughly parallel at a distance of about 35 kilometers and drain to the west to the Hunza valley. The importance of the Hispar Muztagh as a watershed is therefore minor.

In the west of the Hunza Valley, which is accessed by the Karakoram Highway , lies the Batura Muztagh . To the east of the Khurdopin Pass, the transition between Snow Lake and Khurdopin Glacier, lies the Panmah Muztagh . These three mountain ranges form the western and central part of the main Karakoram ridge. In the south and north the Hispar Muztagh borders on the chains of the Lesser Karakoram: to the south of the western Hispar valley lie the Rakaposhi-Haramosh mountains , further east to the south of the Hispar glacier are the Spantik-Sosbun mountains . The Ghujerab Mountains are the northernmost chain of the Karakoram to the north of the Shimshal Valley .
