Maléfique - Psalm 666 ( French "ominous") is a French fantasy / horror film .

action

The former head of the company Carrère is jailed for fraud. In prison he has to share his dilapidated cell with three people. Marcus is a transsexual whose reason for his conviction is not disclosed during the film. Pâquerette is a retarded 20-year-old who manically eats everything. He lived in the pigsty as a child. When he comes out of the stable for the first time, he meets his six-month-old sister, whom he eats for joy. Finally, there is Lassalle, an intellectual who killed his wife in a fit one morning.

One night the inmates find an old book in a hole in the wall. It turns out to be the diary of Charles Danvers, arrested in 1920. This documented his attempts to break out of his cell with the help of black magic.

The four characters quickly find out that the symbols and sayings in the book are actually making an impact. You have hope of breaking out of prison. Pâquerette, who is always called “little boy” by Marcus, begins to finish the book after a failed attempt to break out of the cell. However, just as he has just taken the first bite, he lifts off the floor and all of his bones twist until he dies. In a fit of anger, Marcus throws the book out the window.

The next day, the new inmate, Hippolyte Picus, comes to the cell with a video camera that continuously records what is happening. The next morning Picus disappeared. With the help of the camera, Carrère finds out that he had carried the book with him and that it disappeared through the wall with its help. As a result of this, the three decided to try the same line. They get through the wall into Charles Danvers' jail cell and find out that the book won't help break out. The secret of the book is that it fulfills the greatest wish in life.

To the movie

Maléfique - Psalm 666 takes place almost exclusively in the prison cell. This enabled the production costs to be kept very low.

Another characteristic is the pale color scheme, which underlines the poor lighting conditions in the cell and underlines the gloomy atmosphere. Sometimes you get the feeling that the film is black and white .

Maléfique contains several allusions to the Cthulhu myth . For example, one of the spells invokes Yog-Sothoth , and parts of the diary are in the language of R'lyeh .

The film was released in Germany on January 27, 2004 exclusively as a DVD and was not released in cinemas.

Reviews

The lexicon of the international film wrote: “The laconically staged film takes place almost entirely in the seclusion of the cell in which a deceitful ex-company boss, a moronic cannibal, an athletic transsexual and a homicide are crammed together. [...] Classic topoi of atmospheric horror cinema are not taken up without irony and intelligently varied, whereby an oppressive chamber play develops. "

The website Cinema said: "Economical shock effects, only one location, but interesting characters and psychological tension - this clever chamber play shows how much is possible with a mini-budget."
