The princes were Muslim Pashtuns , descended from Shaikh Sadr ad-Dîn Sadr-i Jahan, who married a daughter of Sultan Bahlul Lodi of Delhi in 1454 and was enfeoffed with some villages. They rose further under the Mughals , and Bayezid Khan (1800–57) was appointed Nawab . Malerkotla was a British protectorate from 1809 to 1947 .
