Malerkotla ( Painter Kotla ) was one of the princely states in the Punjab States Agency of British India . Its capital was the place Malerkotla . The princes were Muslim Pashtuns , descended from Shaikh Sadr ad-Dîn Sadr-i Jahan, who married a daughter of Sultan Bahlul Lodi of Delhi in 1454 and was enfeoffed with some villages. They rose further under the Mughals , and Bayezid Khan (1800–57) was appointed Nawab . Malerkotla was a British protectorate from 1809 to 1947 .
In 1901 the principality had an area of 427 km² and 77,500 inhabitants. Nawab Iftikhar Ali Khan (1947–56) joined the Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU) on July 15, 1948, and joined India on August 20, 1948. On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved and PEPSU part of the state of Punjab .
