Malerkotla (also painter Kotla ; Panjabi ਮਾਲੇਰਕੋਟਲਾ ) is a city ( Municipal Council ) in the northwest Indian state of Punjab .
In the 2011 census, the population was 135,424.
The city is located in the lowlands at an altitude of 251 m 40 km south of the city of Ludhiana in the district of Sangrur . The district capital Sangrur is located 30 km south of Malerkotla.
Malerkotla used to be the capital of the princely state of the same name .
