Sangrur ( Panjabi ਸੰਗਰੂਰ ) is a city ( Municipal Council ) in the northwest Indian state of Punjab .
In the 2011 census, the population was 88,043.
Sangrur is located in the lowlands at an altitude of 240 m 75 km south of the city of Ludhiana . The city forms the administrative seat of the district of the same name . Neighboring cities are Malerkotla (30 km north), Patiala (55 km east) and Barnala (30 km northwest).
Molecular biologist and geneticist Inder Verma (* 1947) was born in Sangrur.
