history

The kalayan tree in front of the cathedral

The first church in Malolos was built in 1591. A century later, the church was reconstructed under the direction of the priest Barrionuevo. Both constructions were made of wood and leaves of the nipa palm were used for the roof . The wooden structure was replaced by a stone structure in 1740 under the direction of Priest Sanchez. The construction was completed in the 1740s, minor renovations were carried out in 1753. The cathedral fell victim to a fire in 1813.

The current building was built from 1819 to October 1826 under the direction of the priest Melchor Fernandez. An earthquake damaged the church in June 1863, until 1872 its reconstruction was carried out under the direction of the architect Alfredo Aldaba. Originally known as the Barasoain Church , the building was consecrated by the Apostolic Nuncio in the Philippines, Bruno Torpigliani, in 1976 and given its current name. It received the status of a minor basilica in 1999.

architecture

The cathedral of Malolos was built in the neoclassical style of the 19th century. Reliefs with the coat of arms of the Augustinian order and other triglyphs are arranged above the semicircular arches seated on Doric columns as an essential stylistic element . The facade is divided into three symmetrical structures. A statue of the Virgin Mary about 6 meters high towers above the cathedral .

Importance of the cathedral

The cathedral is not only of religious, but also of national historical importance. This is where the first Congreso Revolucionario (Revolutionary Assembly) took place during the Philippine Revolution . This met from September 10, 1898 to March 29, 1899 in the cathedral before it had to move to Tarlac during the Philippine-American War due to the invasion of the USA .
