Mammillaria gigantea is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet gigantea comes from Latin and means 'enormously large' and refers to the size of the plant.

description

Mammillaria gigantea grows depressed, almost like a cake, often sunken at the top and clad with white wool felt. The blue-green plant body with the densely placed warts is 9 to 10 centimeters high and 15 to 17 centimeters in diameter. The warts carry milky juice . The axillae are covered with white wool. The up to 12 fine-needle, straight and white radial spines are very small with up to 3 millimeters. The 4 to 6  central spines are usually curved and very strong. The bottom is up to 2 inches long. In the new shoot, the central spines are yellow-brown with a dark tip, later they are yellowish, white to horn-colored reddish at the base.

The flowers appear as with all Mammillarias in wreath. They are green-yellow and reach a size and diameter of 15 millimeters. The fruits are pink to greenish. The seeds are brown.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria gigantea is distributed in the Mexican states of Guanajuato , Durango , San Luis Potosí and Querétaro in mountainous regions between 1750 and 2400 meters.

It was first described in 1898 by Karl Moritz Schumann .

Synonyms are the following described species and varieties:
Neomammillaria hamiltonhoytiae Bravo (1931), Mammillaria hamiltonhoytiae (Bravo) Werderm. (1931), Mammillaria gigantea subsp. hamiltonhoytiae (Bravo) Rogoz. Plein (2003), Mammillaria armatissima Craig (1945), Mammillaria ocotillensis Craig (1945), Mammillaria hastifera Krainz & A. Keller (1946) and Mammillaria saint-pieana Backeb. ex Mottram (1980).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria gigantea subsp. gigantea :
The nominate form has yellowish green flowers. The fruits are cloudy pink to greenish.
  • Mammillaria gigantea subsp. flavovirens Rogoz. & Plein :
The subspecies was originally described by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck as Mammillaria flavovirens . Rogozinski and Plein included it in 2003 as a subspecies of Mammillaria gigantea . The flowers are bright lemon yellow, rarely almost white. The fruits are red.
