Mammillaria goodrichii is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet , which is also irregularly written goodridgii or goodridgei in many publications, honors John Goodridge , who discovered the species.
description
Mammillaria goodrichii has deep tap roots and only occasionally sprouts. The spherical to short cylindrical shoots are up to 8 centimeters high and reach a diameter of 3 to 4 centimeters. The tapered conically shaped blunt warts are without milky sap . The axillae are bare. The 3 to 5 central spines are up to 0.6 inches long, with the lower one usually hooked. The chalky white 10 to 13 radial spines are straight, 0.4 to 0.7 inches long and have dark tips.
The funnel-shaped flowers are cream-colored with stronger or weaker colored central stripes. They are up to 1.5 centimeters long and also measure 1.5 centimeters in diameter. The clubbed red fruits are up to 2.5 centimeters long. They contain smooth, black seeds .
Distribution, Botanical History and Nomenclature
Mammillaria goodrichii is distributed in the Mexican state of Baja California on the offshore islands of Cedros and Guadalupe .
It was first described in 1850 by Frederick Scheer in Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dycks Cacteae in horto Dyckensi cultae anno 1849 . The basis was a copy sent to Scheer by John Goodridge. The spelling of the epithet chosen by Scheer was viewed by many later authors as spelling incorrectly and was changed. However, this change is not justified according to the rules of the ICBN .
Synonyms are Chilita goodrichii (Scheer) Orcutt (1926) and Mammillaria goodrichii (Scheer) Buxb. (1951).
