Mammillaria knippeliana grows singly, occasionally dividing dichotomously and sprouting. The fresh green shoots reach heights of 7 to 8 centimeters and a diameter of 6 centimeters. The solid pyramidal warts are square and blunt. The axillae are covered with white bristles. The 6  central spines are up to 3 inches long. The bottom and top are each the longest. It was first described in 1907 by Leopold Quehl (1849–1923).

The interpretation of this name is still open according to David Richard Hunt . The plants that have been labeled recently belong to Mammillaria karwinskiana in the broadest sense .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
