Mammillaria melaleuca is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet melaleuca means '(Latin melaleucus) black and white'.
description
Mammillaria melaleuca grows individually and in old age also forms groups. The dark green shoots are spherical and 6 to 7 centimeters in diameter. The strong warts are thick, ovate-blunt and without milky sap . The axillae are bare. Usually there is only a slim to stiff central spine with a purple-brown color. The 8 to 9 radial spines are radiating and almost straight, the upper slightly longer brown, the lower white.
The yellow flowers are up to 3 inches long. The fruits are greenish to brownish. They contain blackish brown seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria melaleuca is common in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas .
The first description was in 1850 by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck . Synonyms are Dolichothele melaleuca (Karw. Ex Salm-Dyck) Boed. (1933) and Mammillaria longimamma var. Melaleuca (Karw. Ex Salm-Dyck) E. Kuhn (1982, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
