Mammillaria sempervivi is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet sempervivi means '(Latin sempervivum) always living'.
description
Mammillaria sempervivi only grows individually at first, later also forming groups with a large taproot. The shoots hardly protrude above the soil surface. They are flattened spherical to depressed spherical, cloudy gray-green and 7 to 10 centimeters in diameter. The pyramidal-shaped warts are firm and contain plenty of milky juice . The axillae are woolly. The 2 to 3 central spines are strong, reddish brown to black, turn gray with age and 4 millimeters long. The 2 to 6 radial spines can usually only be observed in the new shoot. They are white, somewhat bristle-like and up to 3 millimeters long.
The funnel-shaped flowers hardly protrude beyond the warts. They are cloudy white to light yellow and measure 1 centimeter in diameter as well as in length. The club-shaped fruits are red. They contain brown seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria sempervivi is common in the Mexican states of San Luis Potosí , Nuevo León , Guanajuato and Querétaro .
The first description was in 1828 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . Synonyms of Mammillaria sempervivi DC. are Mammillaria caput-medusae Otto (1837) and Mammillaria sempervivi var. caput-medusae Backeb. (1961).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
