Mammillaria setispina is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet setispina means 'bristly prickly'.
description
Mammillaria setispina has a gray-green plant body that sprouts from the base, creating larger groups. The individual shoots are up to 30 centimeters long and 3 to 6 centimeters in diameter. The individual warts are conical in shape. The axillae are woolly. About 1 to 4 central spines are 2 to 5 inches long. In contrast, the 10 to 12 radial spines are unevenly flexible and whitish in color with dark tips. The 5 to 6 centimeters large zygomorphic flowers are scarlet red. The stamens stick out strongly. The fruits are dark red and 2 inches long. The seeds are black.
Mammillaria setispina is still treated as Cochemiea in the English original . Lüthy (1995) regards this taxon as a synonym of Mammillaria pondii .
Distribution and systematics
Mammillaria setispina is widespread in the Mexican state of Baja California and occurs in the area near San Borja , San Julio Canyon and on the island of Angel de la Guardia .
It was first described in 1894 as Cactus setispinus by John Merle Coulter . Mary Katharine Brandegee introduced the species to Mammillaria in 1897 .
