The mammoth snail ( Ryssota otaheitana , Syn . : Ryssota ovum ( Valenciennes 1854)) is a Filipino land snail belonging to the genus Ryssota .

features

The shell of this land snail can reach a diameter of 70-100 mm. It varies in color from pale horn colored to maroon brown. In some subspecies the apex is lighter than the base of the case, in others it is the other way around and in some the tip and base of the case are colored the same. The aperture (opening) is large, its inside is white, bluish white or bluish white with a purple hue. Spiral grooves are usually present.

distribution

Ryssota otaheitana is endemic to the Philippines . Their distribution is limited to Luzon , and according to Faustino (1930) also to Panay ( Visayas ).

Way of life

Ryssota otaheitana is nocturnal and occurs at the base of trees or on their buttress roots , under leaves and on the underside of fallen branches and on weathered rock, where it is well camouflaged by its color and difficult to find. It depends on moisture and that is why the rainy season is frequent. During the dry season, it is more likely to be found in wetlands and cooler places. The stock is threatened by forest fires and over-collection.

Taxonomy

The species was described in 1821 by André Étienne d'Audebert de Férussac under the name Helix otaheitana .

use

In the Philippines, the mammoth snail is used as food and as an additive to animal feed. Your snail shell (mostly brown-white colored, approx. 10 cm in diameter) is often offered as a decorative item.
