Mamuju is the capital of the Indonesian province of West Sulawesi and the administrative district of Mamuju . It is on the Makassar Strait .
geography
The city of Mamuju is located in the Mamuju district of the same name . The capital of the district is Binanga .
The city of Mamuju is located on the west coast of Sulawesi between Palu and Makassar , at the southern end of the Bay of Mamuju . In front of it is the island of Karampuang . There is a large reef between the island and the city. The city center is located between the mouths of the Karema and Mamuju rivers . The surrounding area is characterized by hills and forests. The region is known for natural radioactivity from uranium minerals found there . The exposure can reach 2,800 nanosieverts per hour and is the highest in all of Indonesia.
Residents
In 2015, the Mamuju district had 65,954 residents. In 2010 it was 55,105.
The Mandar people live in the region and also form the majority in the city. They are traditional fishermen, sailors and traders. Minorities are the Bugis , Toraja , Macassars and Javanese .
Muslims form the clear majority. In addition, there are also Christians who also have their own churches and small groups of Buddhists and Hinduists live here, a mixture of Adat (the traditional customary law) and Islam.
history
The city's founding date is July 14, 1540. It is said to reflect the founding of the Mamuju Empire. In 1540 the kingdoms Kurri-Kurri, Langgamonar and Managallang were united. The 14th as twice the number seven and July as the seventh month of the year was chosen because of the cultural significance of the seven in Mamuju.
The Portuguese used Mamuju as a stopover on their trade route.
Economy and Transport
The IATA code of Mamuju's Ahmad Kirang Airport in Tampa Padang , 30 kilometers from the city center, is MJU. It is served by Wings Air from Makassar, among others . The ferry port is in the northwest of the city.
Agriculture is practiced in the area. Products are jackfruit , rambutan , durian , rice and bananas.
