Manasse Mathæussen

Manasse Benediktus Mikael Karl Mathæussen (born March 13, 1915 in Qoornoq , † 1989 in Ilulissat ) was a Greenland kayaker .

Life

Manasse Mathæussen was the son of the catechist Peter Abraham Adam Mathæussen (1892–1949) and his wife Kristine Ketura Josepha Lund (1893–?). He was born in Qoornoq, where his father was a catechist at the time. A little later the family moved to North Greenland and spent ten years in Kulusuk in East Greenland.

He received his first kayak at the age of 15. In 1934 Knud Rasmussen had a competition held to see who was best at the Eskimo role . Manasse Mathæussen won and was allowed to appear as a stuntman in Knud Rasmussen's film Palos Brautfahrt . In 1949 he was a member of the Greenland Commission , during which a world championship in kayaking was held in Copenhagen and Manasse Mathæussen was world champion with 10 Eskimo rolls in 18 seconds. Back in Greenland, he began to give courses on the construction and use of kayaks, founded kayak clubs and initiated Greenland kayak championships. This happened at a time when the kayak was losing its importance due to the advent of motor boats. In 1956 he was a stuntman in the movie Qivitoq . In 1960 he drove in Paris on the Seine and in 1966 in Monaco , where he won the commemorative medal for the wedding of Prince Rainier III. was awarded Gracia Patricia . He also wore the Kongelige Belønningsmedalje . In 1986 he received the Greenland Culture Prize . He last appeared in public as a kayaker at the age of 72 and died a little later at the age of 74 in Ilulissat. In 1988 the Danish musician Kim Larsen dedicated the song Vend kajakken to him .
