The film deals with the life story of Nelson Mandela , the first black president of South Africa . The film shows Mandela's development from early childhood through his education to his fight against apartheid and his subsequent imprisonment on Robben Island .
reception
Film critic Roger Ebert gave the film 3 out of 4 stars, although he criticized the plot as incomplete. In particular, Frederik Willem de Klerk's reasons for releasing Mandela have been inadequately elaborated.
