Mandres ( Greek Μάντρες or Μάνδρες ) or Ağıllar is a village on the Karpas peninsula in the north of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus . The municipality is located in the İskele district of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus , twelve kilometers northwest of the district capital and five kilometers southeast of Akanthou / Tatlısu . In 2011 the place, which until the 1970s was inhabited exclusively by up to 400 Greek Cypriots, again had 188 inhabitants.

The Turkish name Ağıllar is a translation of the Greek name Mandres. Both mean 'sheep pen'.

history

The first and only Ottoman census, which took place in 1831, counted the heads of households and recorded religion. In doing so, 25 Christians were identified in Mandres, who were later simply called "Greeks", even if they were not Orthodox. In the censuses under British colonial rule, 145 inhabitants were determined in 1891, ten years later 189, in 1911 there were 204, whereby this year one and in 1921 two "Turks" were registered in the village. The village had grown to 260 inhabitants by 1921 and already had 296 in 1931, only to grow to 370 inhabitants by 1946. In 1960 the population reached its highest level of 398. Only in 1946 did a single Cypriot Turk once again lived in the village. By 1973 the population decreased slightly to 354.

When the occupation of northern Cyprus by Turkish forces began, all residents fled south in August 1974.

After the occupation, Cypriot Turks settled from surrounding villages, for example from Altınova / Agios Iakovos in Mandres, which was renamed like almost all Greek-speaking villages. In 1976 and 1977 Turks from Çivril , a town in the district of Denizli Province in southwestern Anatolia, and from Çarşamba in the Black Sea Province of Samsun were settled in Mandres. In 1978 the place had 108 inhabitants again, a number that rose to 172 by 1996. Since then the population has only increased slowly. In 2006 the place, now called Ağıllar, had 172 inhabitants, in 2011 there were 188.
