Manfred Durzak (born December 10, 1938 in Herzogenrath ) is a German philologist and literary scholar .

Life

Durzak studied German , English and philosophy at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Free University of Berlin . In 1963 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. He was then a lecturer, from 1964 to 1965 at Yale University , from 1966 to 1969 at Indiana University Bloomington , from 1969 to 1972 at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and from 1972 to 1980 again at Indiana University Bloomington (as Full Professor of German Literature). In 1980 he completed his habilitation at the University of Siegen . Subsequently, he was Professor of Modern German Literature at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg . In 1984 he became a full professor at the University of Paderborn . He was visiting professor in Toronto and Montreal and received several scholarships a. a. from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the Ford Foundation . Since 1992 he has been visiting professor several times in the USA and India, as well as in Turkey and Australia.

Initially, Durzak's research focused on German literature of the 20th century, especially exile literature. At the suggestion of Peter Demetz , he was one of the first to index the extensive estate of the Austrian novelist Hermann Broch in the beincke Rare Book Library, the manuscript library of Yale University. A number of publications testify to this occupation, which later passed on to his student Paul Michael Lützeler , who did his doctorate on Hermann Broch with him.

The expansion of his research interests went in the direction of literature of the 18th century, comparative literature, media literature and intercultural literature. However, occupation with contemporary German literature became central. To a certain extent he conducted literary field research and dealt with the production aesthetics of these authors in numerous workshop discussions with prominent German-speaking authors from Elias Canetti to Heinrich Böll and Günter Grass . Some of these conversations are documented in three book publications.
