Athletic career

Goalkeeper Manfred Grimm first played in a GDR league league game in 1957 at the age of 18 at the company sports community (BSG) Wismut Gera. With only nine league games in the 26-game season, he was just a substitute goalkeeper as in the seasons 1958 (11 missions) and 1959 (10). In 1960, Grimm replaced the previous goalkeeper Siegfried Offrem and in turn became number one in the goal of BSG Wismut. In addition to his 22 GDR league appearances (out of 26), Grimm also played an international match with the GDR youth national team . In the seasons from 1960 (calendar year season) to 1964/65 (summer-spring season since 1961) he completed 136 of 151 GDR league games played. When Wismut Gera was promoted to the GDR league in the 1965/66 season, Grimm had to pause. In his only league season in 1966/67, he was only used ten times between the 8th and 17th matchday when the new goalkeeper Dieter Kühne could not play. The Wismut team did not succeed in staying in the upper league, so the Gera team had to compete in the GDR league again from 1967/68. Grimme was 17 times in goal games, then moved to the third-rate district division Motor Hermsdorf . With him he was Gera district champion in 1969 and returned to the GDR league. The Hermsdorfer were only able to hold out for one season in 1970/71, in which Grimm played 28 of the 30 point games as a regular goalkeeper. In 1971 they managed to return to the GDR league and held the class for two seasons. Grimm was again goalkeeper number one and stood in the gate of BSG Motor until relegation in 1973 another 39 GDR league games. After this relegation he was 34 years old and did not return to higher-class football.
