Erik Lund (director)

Erik Lund (real name Mannfred Liebenau , also Manfred Liebenau , born September 16, 1893 in Berlin , † June 13, 1958 in Los Angeles , United States ) was a German film director , film producer and film manager.

Life

Manfred Liebenau had received training as an architect and initially also worked in this profession. After he got to know Joe May towards the end of the First World War , the latter first brought him to May-Film as its managing director. Since 1918 - the year in which Liebenau May's daughter, the actress Eva May , married - he has directed a wealth of entertainment films under the stage name "Erik Lund", most of which he also produced (for Ring-Film). In December 1920 he founded the Liebenau & Co. GmbH film copier . His brother Siegfried Liebenau (1899–1982) became an authorized signatory in the company and from 1923 co-managing director.

After his marriage failed, Lund's film career also ended de facto in 1922. He did not get any directing orders and concentrated on the production and distribution of films. From 1925 until the company was dissolved in 1927, he was co-managing director of Ring-Film Verleih-Gesellschaft mbH . In April 1928 he became co-managing director of Harry Piel Film GmbH at the side of Harry Piel . In the dual function of managing director and production manager, he then worked for Richard Tauber Tonfilm GmbH , Max Reichmann Filmproduktion GmbH and, most recently, Comedia Film GmbH . After the Nazis came to power, Liebenau stayed in London and Switzerland and made several trips to America. In May 1940, the Nazi regime revoked German citizenship. Liebenau assumed a new identity as Frank Lee Williams and became an American citizen in January 1950.

Manfred Liebenau had four siblings. His sister Gertrud, her husband and their son were murdered in Auschwitz concentration camp in 1942 .
