The pigment occurs in two different polymorphs . The α-polymorph has a monoclinic crystal structure with the space group P 2 ₁ / c (space group no. 14) , while the β-form has a triclinic crystal system with the space group P 1 (space group no. 2) . Manganese violet is used in cosmetics in eyeliner , eye shadow , lipstick and nail polish .
