Manifestis probatum

With the papal document Manifestis probatum of May 23, 1179, Pope Alexander III. his approval of the recognition of the Kingdom of Portugal . The Pope confirmed Portugal's independence from Castile and confirmed Count Alfonso Henrique as King Alfonso I of Portugal . Alexander III thus followed the request made in 1143 and combined this recognition with a high demand for payment as protection money and interest payment. With this very brief and clearly formulated document, the Pope underlined the ties to the Holy See and Rome's interest in the Portuguese dioceses , as well as the development of the relatively independent clergy in Portugal. Using the initial words of the Arenga , the privilege was granted to Innocent III in 1212 . and 1218 by Honorius III. renewed.

The original is kept in Lisbon in the Torre do Tombo National Archives , Bulas Fund (see Bulle (document) ).
