After the teams have been determined, four groups of four teams are formed.

Two teams compete against each other. The two winners of the duels compete against each other. The winner of this game is safe in the so-called upper bracket. The losing match occurs against one of the two teams that had already lost the first game, but they play against each other beforehand to determine who will play against the loser in the second round. The second team that lands in the upper bracket is determined, the other teams land in the lower bracket.

The advantage of the upper bracket is that defeat is allowed there. The team that lost falls into the lower bracket, but if it loses one more game there, it is eliminated from the tournament. In the lower bracket, one more round is played first, this is played in the best-of-one , so that there are eight teams at the end of the group phase and thus also at the beginning of the main event.

These now compete against each other in best-of-three games. Four each in the upper bracket and four in the lower bracket. OG prevailed against Natus Vincere, MVP Phoenix and Newbee in the upper bracket. After Team Liquid suffered a 2-0 defeat against MVP Phoenix, the team ended up in the lower bracket. However, there it prevailed against CompLexity, Na`Vi, Fnatic, LGD Gaming and Newbee. In the final, the team had to admit defeat against OG.

Observers found the early retirement of the top teams Team Secret and Evil Geniuses particularly disappointing. Team Secret entered the race as the winner of the previous major as "defending champion" and Evil Geniuses, the winners of the 2015 international and thus unofficial world champions, failed in the first knockout round of the tournament. Since there had previously been massive changes in the line-up of the teams, some of which were heatedly discussed, especially at Team Secret, as there were no compelling reasons to change the team, it is assumed that the teams did not manage to align themselves to bring in.
