Johann Wilhelm Mannagetta von Lerchenau (born October 14, 1785 in Vienna , † October 15, 1843 there ) was an Austrian banking specialist and writer.

Life

Johann Wilhelm Ritter Mannagetta von Lerchenau was the son of Philipp Jacob Ritter Mannagetta von Lerchenau. Johann W. studied philosophy and law in Vienna and Olomouc and entered the civil service in Olomouc in 1805. In 1810 he was employed in the Brno District Office, from 1811 to 1813 he was also the editor of the “Brünner Zeitung” and published the entertainment paper “Moravia”. In 1816 he left the civil service and shortly afterwards joined the newly founded privileged Austrian National Bank , whose general secretary he became in 1826. During his administration, Mannagetta faced the difficult problem of the constant decline in the metal treasure. He tried to remedy this evil by buying silver bars abroad, but this did not succeed because the banknotes in circulation increased to the same extent. There was only a slight improvement in 1832 (the coverage ratio was approx. 20%), but this was perhaps due to the favorable turn in the political economy. In the following years there was again a deterioration in currency coverage, which reached its low point in 1840 at 9.1%. From then on there was strong government intervention against which he was quite powerless. In 1841 the privilege of the bank was renewed, whereby the independence of the bank was almost completely lost.

Mannagetta's writings show a solidarity with the people and a high level of cultural awareness. Some of his plays were influenced by Scott's novels. His dramas were performed on the court stages in Vienna, Munich and Berlin.
