Manning Marius Kimmel

Manning Marius Kimmel (born October 25, 1832 in Apple Creek , Perry County , Missouri , †  February 27, 1916 in Henderson , Kentucky ) was an American officer and engineer.

Life

Manning M. Kimmel was the son of Joseph Singleton Husband Kimmel (1797–1868) and Caroline Monica Manning (1813–1832). His mother died giving birth. He began studying at Princeton University , but was expelled from there for organizing a student protest. In 1853 he received a place at the West Point Military Academy , which he graduated with honors in 1857. Princeton University then awarded him an honorary Bachelor of Arts degree . On July 1, 1857 he received his provisional and after attending the cavalry school in Carlisle , Pennsylvania , on August 18, 1858 his final appointment as a lieutenant in the cavalry.

As an officer in the 2nd Cavalry Regiment (2nd Cavalry) Kimmel took part in the wars against the Indians in Texas and was involved in several missions. On April 1, 1861, he was promoted to first lieutenant. In the Civil War , Kimmel was, although he sympathized with the southern states, as an officer of the Union Army in the first battle of Bull Run (July 21, 1861) and the defense of the capital Washington, DC (July to August 1861), but changed in the same Year the sides and joined the Confederate Army . There he served in the staff of Generals Price , Van Dorn and Magruder , most recently with the rank of major.

After the war ended, Kimmel went to Mexico for fear of persecution , where he worked as a railway engineer in Mexico City and Veracruz . Returned to the United States, he served in senior positions at the St. Bernard Mining Company in St. Charles , Kentucky, from 1874 to 1884 . In 1884 he took up residence in Henderson, where he worked as a coal dealer and real estate agent.

From the 1868 with Sibella ("Sibbie") Lambert (born March 19, 1846, † January 23, 1919), the marriage resulted in several children, including the later commander of the US Pacific Fleet, Admiral Husband E. Kimmel . Kimmel died in Henderson in 1916 and was buried there. His grave in Fernwood Cemetery still exists today.
