Manolo Guardia
Manolo Guardia (born January 8, 1938 in Montevideo , † March 13, 2013 ) was a Uruguayan pianist and composer.
Manolo Guardia received his musical training from Guillermo Kolischer and Santiago Baranda Reyes . In the course of his musical career he dealt in particular with the styles of jazz and candombe . During the civil-military dictatorship in Uruguay, he lived in exile in Venezuela . There he resided in Caracas for five years . He returned to Uruguay in the 1980s. As a result of malpractice in an operation, Guardia has been paraplegic in recent years.
Guardia belonged to the jazz formation "All Jazz" of the Hot Club de Montevideo . Later he founded the first avant-garde tango ensemble in Uruguay, "Quinteto de la Guardia Nueva". He was also a pioneer of the movement of the "Candombe de vanguardia" (avant-garde Candombe) and made numerous records in this context. In 1969 he founded the chamber tango ensemble Camerata together with Federico García Vigil . This was later renamed "Camerata Punta del Este" while expanding the musical repertoire to include Brazilian music and baroque music. The ensemble produced a total of four records, which were released in Uruguay as well as Argentina , Brazil and Japan . Guardia also recorded plates with Georges Roos and Rubén Rada . In addition, his participation in various radio programs as well as Telecataplum is recorded in Canal 12 . At comedic and musical events he appeared as a narrator alongside guest artists such as Mercedes Sosa , Vinicius de Moraes and Dori and Nana Caymi . He also worked in the field of café-concerts and founded "Preludo" in this context in the 1980s. In the Teatro del Centro he organized "Mozart, Beethoven y la cucaracha". In the 1990s he also directed "Opus 3 Café Concert". Even after his paraplegia he recorded another record in 2006 with "Tangos para la mano derecha". Guardia was buried at the Cementerio del Norte in Montevideo.
