Manuel Valdés Larrañaga
Manuel Valdés Larrañaga (born April 16, 1909 in Bilbao , † October 17, 2001 in Madrid ) was a Spanish sports official, fascist and diplomat .
Life
Manuel Valdés Larrañaga married María de la Piedad Colon de Carvajal (1915-1993) and became Marqués consorte de Avella. He was an experienced swimmer, was several times Spanish champion in various swimming disciplines and a member of the Spanish national swimming team and water polo . Larrañaga studied at the School of Architecture in Madrid and received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Barcelona. He was a close friend of the Basque architect José Manuel Aizpurúa .
Larrañaga was politically active on the side of the monarchists. In September 1933, he and Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera , the Falange Española. After the coup of the Unión Militar Española in July 1936, he was arrested by the executive of the Second Republic in the Cárcel Modelo de Madrid . In 1939, Francisco Franco began his career in the state apparatus . He was initially a volunteer with the Azul Division . He soon joined the Junta del Colegios de Arquitectos de España (Fascist Estates Associations) and became dean of the Colegio de Arquitectos de Madrid
In 1950 Larrañaga was briefly president of the Real Federación Española de Fútbol . He was then appointed ambassador for the next twenty years, first in Santo Domingo (1951–1953), then in Caracas (1954–1961), Cairo (1962–1963), Kuwait City (1964–1968) and finally in Beirut ( 1968–1970), where he was also accredited by the government in Nicosia. In 1971 Francisco Franco appointed him to his Council of State. Here Larrañaga was also active in the Fundación Nacional Francisco Franco , a fascist foundation.
