Political career

Araújo joined the opposition party RENAMO, which dominated Zambézia, early on. In the parliamentary elections in 2004 he ran for a mandate in the Mozambican parliament ( Assembleia da República ) and was elected to parliament with 89 other candidates. He held the mandate between 2004 and 2009.

In the course of the increasing bipolarization of the political landscape in Mozambique and the structures of the RENAMO, which were sometimes perceived as authoritarian, several party members fell out with the leadership and founded their own party, Movimento Democrático de Moçambique (MDM). Manuel de Araújo also switched from RENAMO to MDM.

In 2011 a by-election of the local elections took place in several Mozambican places, including Araújo's hometown Quelimane. Araújo ran for the office of mayor and was able to leave the FRELIMO candidate far behind with 62.27% compared to 37.72%.

In the local elections in 2013 , the electoral commission initially published results that showed a victory for FRELIMO. Only after several complaints about election fraud were these corrected and Manuel de Araújo officially confirmed as re-elected.
