Egüés first had a job at the Cathedral of Santa María de Vitoria in what is now Vitoria-Gasteiz , after which he was first conductor at the Cathedral of Lleida . After being ordained canon , he held the same position at Burgos Cathedral from November 1685 . In October 1691 he was appointed to the Cathedral of Saragossa , but returned to Burgos in February 1692. Here he worked until his death.

Manuel de Egüés was the best-known representative of the strict style in Spanish church music in the 17th century at the turn of the 18th century. He seldom used the early bel canto style of his contemporaries and their virtuoso instrumental treatment; he oriented himself more to the imitation techniques of the Franco-Flemings in the setting of voices and instruments . His traditional compositions include u. a. the 17 Salves en romance in Spanish vernacular, which paraphrase Marian hymns like the Salve Regina or Ave maris stella . They are based on the repertoire of Gregorian chant . Next he composed ten psalm settings and motets in Franco-Flemish style, Lamentations for Holy Week -Liturgie and numerous villancicos .
