Manx is an EP from rapper Maeckes . It was released on November 11, 2011 on the independent label Chimperator Productions . Manx was released digitally and in a limited edition as a physical sound carrier.

background

Maeckes released his first solo album under the title Kids in March 2010 via Chimperator Productions . With this, the rapper was also able to enter the album charts. In the same year, the mixtape Mash Up 2 and the remix album Eins followed . In the summer of 2011 the group Die Orsons , which consists of the hip-hop musicians Plan B, Kaas and Tua in addition to Maeckes , was signed to the major label Universal . The group then began to work intensively on new song material. These recordings were characterized by an experimental approach. According to Maeckes, working with Die Orsons made him want to record " rap in its pure form ". For this reason, the rapper used the time after his studio work with his group to produce beats and write lyrics. Since Maeckes says he has a more conceptual approach to recording his releases and has correspondingly high demands on his albums, he decided on the extended play format . From the resulting songs, he selected eight pieces for the EP.

At the beginning of August, the EP was released under the title Manx . The title is based on the Manx cat breed , which is characterized by not having a tail, which is also reflected in the cover design. The cover was presented on August 8, 2011. At the end of September 2011 the track list of the EP was announced. The publication took place in digital form and as a physical sound carrier. The CD version of Manx was limited to 1,000 copies. According to Maeckes, the physical sound carrier was sold out shortly after it was released. Another edition was waived because the " value " of the limited edition should not be reduced.

Guest Posts

Three songs with guest rappers were written for Manx . Plan B, with which Maeckes had recorded various releases in the past as Duo Maeckes & Plan B , was involved in the production of Black Swan . The beat reminded the rappers " of the mood of" White Trash " ", a song from their album As if we were friends . This mood was taken up for the song Black Swan , which from Maeckes' point of view gives a “ retro feeling ”. The piece No Man's Land was planned as a joint song by the group The Orsons. After Maeckes had presented his verse to the three other members, only Tua could contribute another verse, so No Man's Land appeared on Maeckes' EP. Furthermore, JAW on piss out of wine glasses to hear.

production

Maeckes produced the songs on the EP himself. Insights into his way of working, such as the production of the play No Man's Land , were given through the publication of making-of videos . The rapper himself states that he does not see himself as a full producer. His way of working is similar to that of a child and is “ intuitive and direct. “After the recordings were finished, the mixing followed . This was taken over by Kodimey Awokou , who had published music himself in the past through Chimperator Productions .

Piss from Wine Glasses , the joint song with JAW, was the focus in the run-up to the release of the EP. First, a video appeared in which Maeckes presented excerpts from the production of the beat for the piece. The finished song was then released on the CD included with the 139th issue of hip-hop magazine Juice . A video about piss from wine glasses was also made in the attic above the Juice editorial office . Excerpts from the recordings of the video also appeared in a making-of video.

Another exclusive song was released in mid-October, Facebook Exclusive . After Maeckes appeared for an interview on the Berlin radio station Kiss FM , a fan suggested Maeckes create a song based on the melody running in the background of his performance. Maeckes published this on the social network Facebook .

On November 9, 2011, the second video for the song No Man's Land , the collaboration with Tua, was released. Another video was shot for the song Endlich Reform , which was not included on the EP . The video for SLBST came out a week after Manx released it .

reception

In a review, the Laut.de e-zine awarded Manx four out of five possible evaluation points . The first piece, Zoom , is praised for its detailed descriptions, which stand out from earlier pieces by Maecke, in which the rapper “ spins his content around individual phrases ”. SLBST and piss from wine glasses convince the editor Simon Langemann with Maeckes' " energetic [n] flow ". JAW was also perfectly chosen as a guest rapper. The peak of intensity is reached with the song Black Swan , in which Maeckes and Plan B capture the energy of their song White Trash . The second half of the EP is quieter and more in line with the rapper's well-known style. With the piece Unperfekt, Maeckes let the listener “get very close to his conscience, which is marked by self-doubt, and create the most thoughtful moment of the EP with organ sounds. “ Langemann also praised Gossip , which offers an interesting chronicle of Maeckes' career. The productions that Maeckes himself contributed and from which all songs benefit are also highlighted. Finally, the Laut.de editor hopes that Maeckes, despite the “ foreseeable Orsons hype ” in 2012, will find the time in the future “ to process his complex trains of thought in great music. "

In a review by the hip-hop magazine Juice , Manx is praised as a good rap EP by the editor Marc Leopoldseder. The production is “ simple, but useful ” and offers Maeckes the basis “ to present his content in a multi-layered manner. Manx could, for lack of a more apt expression, be called“ emo rap ”. In Piss from Wine Glasses Maeckes becomes a " cynical battlerapper ", in Black Swan a " rowdy genre critic " and in No Man's Land a " rowdy reality nag. "With his EP, Maeckes shows that he is a" friend of silent observation and eloquent communication ".

Dominik Lenze wrote a rating for the website Rap.de, in which Manx is described as " calm, thoughtful music, but at the same time incredibly apt and sometimes surprisingly biting ". In Problems Smile Away Maeckes illustrates the consolidation of emotional problems through a lack of pronunciation, while the rapper in Imperfect reflects his own weaknesses. Black Swan , on the other hand, seems “ a little trivial and almost superfluous compared to the other songs. “Both the contributions by JAW and Tua and the beats of the EP, which carry the mood of the songs, are positively highlighted. In the case of the song No Man's Land, the musical basis “continues the text by other means. "In summary, Manx is on the one hand a textually sad work, but on the other hand it is incredibly beautiful in its" thoughtfulness and musical design ". Through this combination of “ sadness and beauty, drama and aesthetics ”, Maeckes' music can be described as art.
