María del Carmen Gloria Contreras Roeniger

María del Carmen Gloria Contreras (y) Roeniger , known as the artist as Gloria Contreras , (born November 15, 1934 in Mexico City ; † November 25, 2015 there ) was a Mexican dancer and choreographer .

Life

Gloria Contreras first learned to dance from 1946 to 1954 in Mexico from the French Nelsy Dambré . From 1956 to 1964 she attended the School of American Ballet in New York , where she received lessons from Pierre Vladimirov , Felia Doubrovska , Anatole Oboukhoff , Muriel Stuart and George Balanchine . From 1958 to 1965 she also learned from Carola Trier in New York .

She taught choreography at the choreography workshop of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), founded in 1970 , of which she was director. Contreras had been a member of the UNESCO International Council for Dance since 2003 and was a member of the Academia de Artes .

  • 1981: Silver Cup "Excelencia Artística" from the American magazine "Popular Opera"

  • 1985/1989: “Una Vida en la Danza” medal from the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes
  • 1992: Medal from the Universidad de Guadalajara
  • 1993: Medal of the Faculty of Psychology, UNAM
  • 1995: Gold medal from the Colegio de Bachilleres
  • 1995: UNAM prize for artistic creation and cultural expansion
  • 2002: “Guillermina Bravo” award
  • 2005: Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes in the "Fine Arts" category.
