Guillermina Bravo

Guillermina Bravo (born November 13, 1920 in Chacaltianguis , Veracruz ; † November 6, 2013 in Santiago de Querétaro , Mexico ) was a Mexican ballet dancer , choreographer and ballet director. In 1947 she co-founded the Academy of Mexican Dance (Academia de la Danza Mexicana) and in 1948, together with Josefina Lavalle , founded the Mexican National Ballet in Mexico City , which has been located in the state of Querétaro since 1991 , where she also became the national center for contemporary dance in 1991 founded. Bravo was considered the main character of modern Mexican dance.

biography

Bravo learned folk dance at the Escuela Nacional de Danza ( Spanish for national dance (high) school ) and studied music at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música , the national music conservatory of Mexico. In 1938 she received lessons from Estrella Morales . She learned choreography autodidactically from 1940 to 1945, when she performed as the ballerina of the Ballet de Bellas Artes ( ballet of fine arts ; at that time directed by Waldeen ) and the art theater ballet . In the following years she co-founded the Academy of Mexican Dance and then the National Ballet. From 1960 she stopped performing herself, but continued to lead the national ballet. Bravo was a member of the Academia de Artes and the World Dance Alliance-Americas and was awarded the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes , the national prize for science and arts, in 1979 . She was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the Universidad Veracruzana .
