biography

Waldeen went to Mexico with the Japanese choreographer Seki Sano . She left Mexico again and returned in 1939 with the ballet dancer Winifred Winider to dance in Mexico City at the Teatro de Bellas Artes ( Spanish for theater of fine arts ). Here she founded the ballet of the theater, the so-called Ballet de Bellas Artes ( Spanish for ballet of the fine arts ), which she directed until its dissolution in 1947. During this time she also had a relationship with Bodo Uhse and lived with him before he separated from her and married Alma Agee . She herself married the theater director Rodolfo Valencia and went to Cuba from 1962 to 1965 at the invitation of the local revolutionary government. In 1966 she re-founded a ballet company known as "Waldeen Ballet", which also included Guillermina Bravo and Ana Mérida .

Walt Whitman saw her choreographies for his poems as a "human" implementation. Waldeen was also an important translator of the poems of Pablo Neruda, in particular of his poetry book Canto General . Neruda said in this regard, "Waldeen, thank you for the poems that go with my poems, which are better than mine."
