There are about 40 small, flat and densely forested islands . They are located within the reef ring near Macharchar and are protected as the Ngerukeuid Islands Wildlife Preserve . To the west of the main group of islands, the islets of Ngkael , Kemokem and Kmekumer join the fringing reef crown . For many people, the Seventy Islands are the epitome of the landscape of Palau.
